St. Matthew’s Good News – 5/10/2024

What does it mean to have a “heavenly perspective?”

Some Christian traditions seem to emphasize heaven at the expense of “living out our salvation” in important and impactful ways in this life. Other traditions are so “earthly-minded” that they have little concern for a heavenly perspective (and, thus, the true need for internal transformation). As is often the case with extremes, and those who think that they dictate to the revelation of God rather than sit under its wisdom, neither reaction is true.

On Sunday, Paul has direction for us concerning balancing the earthly and the heavenly. Consistent with the teaching of the New Testament, Paul reminds us that we don’t get to choose between NOW and LATER or heaven and earth. All these realities matter for our eternal salvation and service to God and humanity.

As usual, Paul establishes for us that good theology matters in everyday decision making and in the shaping of our priorities. Poor theology erodes and empties all meaning from these same applications.

See you Sunday.

READING AND STUDY GROUP
This summer, we will initiate a study using the book “Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help, and How to Reverse It.” This study aims to foster dialogue on the most effective ways to assist the homeless and those suffering for various reasons. There is a sign-up sheet now posted in the hallway outside of the office for those interested in participating in this class. After a few weeks, a scheduling meeting will be planned to discuss the specifics. I am considering beginning the class in May or June. It will likely consist of four seminar-style classes on a Saturday or a weeknight, depending on what suits everyone. Your feedback is welcomed.
